Vatican clarifies Pope's condom comments

VATICAN CITY The Vatican on Tuesday clarified the pope's controversial comments about condoms and HIV, saying he by no means suggested their use could be condoned as a means of avoiding an unwanted pregnancy. The Vatican's moral watchdog, the Congregation of the Doctrine of the Faith, issued a statement Tuesday saying some commentators had misunderstood and misrepresented the pope's remarks in a book-length interview released last month entitled "Light of the World." The Vatican has been under pressure from conservative theologians to issue such a clarification amid widespread confusion about what Pope Benedict XVI meant and whether he was breaking with church teaching. In the book, Benedict said that condoms weren't the real or moral solution to battling HIV and AIDS. But he said that condom use in some cases, such as for male prostitutes, could be a first step in a more moral and responsible human sexuality.

The Vatican statement reaffirmed that the church considered prostitution "gravely immoral.""However, those involved in prostitution who are HIV positive and who seek to diminish the risk of contagion by the use of a condom may be taking the first step in respecting the life of another even if the evil of prostitution remains in all its gravity," the statement said. It stressed that his logic was "in full conformity with the moral theological tradition of the church." The pope's remarks have been mired in confusion ever since they were first published ahead of the official release date in an excerpt in the Vatican newspaper L'Osservatore Romano on Nov. 20.

The official Italian translation of the original German published in L'Osservatore made two translation errors that fueled the confusion: It used the word "justified" in the pope's analysis and also used the feminine version of 'prostitute' as opposed to the masculine an important distinction given that condoms in heterosexual intercourse are a form of artificial contraception, which the church opposes. The Vatican spokesman, the Rev. Federico Lombardi, added to the confusion when he said at the official book presentation on Nov. 23 that he had spoken to the pontiff and asked if it mattered whether the prostitute in question was male or female. Lombardi said the pope told him no, and that it didn't matter if it was a man, woman or transsexual. In the statement, the Vatican stuck closely to what the pontiff originally said in the interview and stressed that he was not talking about sex between husband and wife or condom use as a means of contraception. "The idea that anyone could deduce from the words of Benedict XVI that it is somehow legitimate, in certain situations, to use condoms to avoid an unwanted pregnancy is completely arbitrary and is in no way justified either by his words or in his thought," the statement said.

Veteran character actor Steve Landesberg dies
Dec. 20, 2010, 10:34 PM EST
LOS ANGELES -- Steve Landesberg may have been best known for his role as the intellectual and sometimes annoying Detective Sgt. Arthur Dietrich on the long-running 1970s cop comedy "Barney Miller." But younger audiences knew him too for a slew of recent parts such as the doctor on the 2008 hit movie "Forgetting Sarah Marshall."

Landesberg appeared in dozens of TV shows, his curly haired, bespectacled face easily recognizable. Recent credits included "Everybody Hates Chris," "Just Jordan," "That 70s Show" and "American Dad." "He was a wonderful comic and superb actor who gave so much of himself in every performance," said Shirley Jones, who appeared opposite Landesberg in what was one of his final appearances, an episode of "The Cleaner" last year. His most successful role was that of Dietrich on "Barney Miller, which was set in a New York City police station populated by oddballs and eccentrics. It aired from 1975 to 1982. Landesberg's Dietrich was noted for his endless knowledge and expertise on seemingly every obscure subject imaginable, which was coupled with a sometimes patronizing attitude. He once refused to wish a Happy Thanksgiving to a fellow officer, explaining he was an agnostic and wouldn't know who to thank. In "Forgetting Sarah Marshall," he listened patiently as Marshall's former boyfriend described a sexual tryst, then revealed he was really a pediatrician. Landesberg also played a doctor in the TV series "Head Case," which aired from 2007 to 2009. Other TV credits included "The Rockford Files," "Two Guys, a Girl and a Pizza Place," "Cosby," "Law and Order" and "The Golden Girls." Information on survivors was not immediately available.

............Remembering Steve Landesberg As "Dietrich" From Barney Miller Show...........

Wojciehowicz had just let a prisoner escape from the rear of a voting booth, while allowing the prisoner to exercise his voting rights which Wojciehowicz defended as he, a veteran marine-defender of liberty. Feeling horrible Wojciehowicz explains to Deitrich;

Wojciehowicz: (hitting his head with his hand/palm) "Man, I feel so stupid, I was so ignorant, right in front of me he disappears our the back, how stupid could I be"

Dietrich: "Woj' your being to hard on your self, this happens all the time-really common, of all the prisoners that are in apprehension of an officer of the law, there are 1,232 escapes from custody. Of those 1,232 only 75% are recaptured in a 24 hour period, those remaining, the 25%, only 21% are recaptured in a 3 month period, the remaining 3% are recaptured within a 9 month frame, and the remaining 1% are recaptured within a year of their escape, and then the process starts all over again"

Wojciehowicz: "Wow, I did not realize dat, tanks Dietrich, that makes me feel a ton better, by the way, Dietrich have you ever lost a criminal, you know trough something like this, or something,?"

Dietrich: (beginning to walk away) "Who me?", "You gotta be kiddin'" "No way"
