The Law of Moses vs. Grace and the New Covenant

Copied from the Christian forums;
It is obvious to most believers that, scripturally speaking, we are not under Law, specifically, the Law of Moses, or any of it's 613 commandments.

In this brief post I desire to show that the Old Covenant, Grace and the New Covenant are three distinctly different things.

Grace

Most will also agree, scripturally speaking, that we are now under "Grace." And all of what is said above, is also true here, with a broad array of opinions of what it means to be under grace.

Still others, most, will say we are under "grace" and also say we are "under the new covenant" and mingle them together, as though grace and the new covenant are one and the same. They are not! They are as different as darkness is to light.

The New Covenant

After a careful reading of scripture, the student will see that the "New Covenant" was promised only to the HOUSE OF ISRAEL. And the careful student will also see what is in this new covenant, because it is all over scripture. It includes law keeping. And it also includes a supernatural empowerment by God to obey his law. So that they will have Gods law, even his statutes and ordinances, written in their hearts, and minds, and they will DO THEM, and they shall walk in them. This is not what we have today.

But the student of Gods word now comes to a quandry, and it gets down to the very meanings of words. The student of Gods word will see that those under grace, are not under law, even so much as the ordinances and statutes. And that any who would add law to grace, or seek to be justified by law, is obligated to keep the whole law, without fail.

So, part of the problem is those under grace are not under law, and we are not to walk as though we were under law. We are to walk as new creatures, as part of a new creation, where Christ is the Second Adam, and head of this new race of the Uncondemned, and the Justified.

But the scriptures are plain; The New Covenant clearly includes law keeping. Yet we not not under law. We are under Grace. And Grace and Law are antithetical. Thus it is plain that believers and members of the body of Christ cannot be under both Grace and the New Covenant, because the New Covenant includes law keeping. Lets see some of the things in "the new covenant & lawkeeping."

Hbr 8:8 For finding fault with them, he saith, Behold, the days come, saith the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah:

Hbr 8:9 Not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day when I took them by the hand to lead them out of the land of Egypt; because they continued not in my covenant, and I regarded them not, saith the Lord.

Hbr 8:10 For this [is] the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, saith the Lord; I will put my laws into their mind, and write them in their hearts: and I will be to them a God, and they shall be to me a people:

Hbr 8:11 And they shall not teach every man his neighbour, and every man his brother, saying, Know the Lord: for all shall know me, from the least to the greatest.

Hbr 8:12 For I will be merciful to their unrighteousness, and their sins and their iniquities will I remember no more.

Grace Incompatible with Law and Both Covenants

Thus, grace is antithetical to the law of Moses. And grace is also antithetical to the New Covenant. Grace is neither. The confusion is answered through understanding that the New Covenant was promised ONLY TO ISRAEL and will have its fulfillment ONLY THROUGH ISRAEL.

When Jesus came preaching, he said; "I have not come, but for the Lost Sheep of the House of Israel." And he meant it. The promise of the Messiah and Deliverer was made ONLY TO ISRAEL and will be fulfilled ONLY THROUGH ISRAEL. Jesus did establish the New Covenant with the 11 Apostles and they did receive the supernatural empowerment to obey the entire law of Moses, as did those who believed "their message." This was called the Baptism of the Holy Spirit. And is a different Baptism than the one believers in Paul's message believes. Today, when people believe that Christ died for their Sins, and rose from the Dead, they are saved. Eternally. They are taken, by God, out of the condemned race of Adam, and Baptized into Christ's death, burial and Resurrection, and then find themselves in the new race, where Christ is the Second Adam, and head of the uncondemned and justified.

On Baptisms

But we are not baptized with the same baptism, as their baptism supernaturally empowered them to obey Gods law, all of it. Thus under their baptism, they were under law, but given supernatural abilities from god to keep it, down to the 613th commandment. Thus, James, when writing to this PRE-PAULINE CHIEFLY JEWISH NEW COVENANT CHURCH, he told them, as he should, that "faith without works is dead...." It must be realized that those words of James were written while Israel was still Gods favored people, not set aside, and STILL UNDER THE LAW OF MOSES.

Thus, Grace is in opposition to the Law of Moses or what we call the Old Covenant. And Grace is also in opposition to the New Covenant. As both covenants require law keeping, while one of them provides the empowerment to obey from the heart Gods law. Grace is NOT A COVENANT! This needs to be understood. And Grace is also simply not a kinder and gentler Law of Moses. Grace, and to be under Grace is to be under neither the new or the old covenaqnt, as BOTH COVENANTS WERE AND ARE TO ISRAEL ALONE AND TO THE "HOUSE OF ISRAEL."

Thus, with all due diligence, every believer must take heed to the Apostle Paul's warning that anyone who preaches another gospel other than the one he preached is anathema or under an eternal curse. We must take heed to make sure we build on the foundation of Christ as Paul laid down in 1st Corinthians 3, where he shows himself and Moses to be the 2 MASTER-BUILDERS OF GOD. Moses was faithful in all of Gods house and was the MASTER-BUILDER OF THE LAW OF GOD. While Paul was chosen by God to be the WISE MASTER-BUILDER AND APOSTLE TO THE GENTILES AND THE BODY OF CHRIST.

The House of Israel

Thus to wrap it up. Grace is not law. And is in opposition to Law and antithetical. And Grace is also clearly not the New Covenant, or else the words of scripture, telling us that the New Covenant was TO THE HOUSE OF ISRAEL have no meaning.

To make the claim that the Body of Christ is Israel is to compound the error. The HOUSE OF ISRAEL is, and will always be, ONLY PEOPLE WHO ARE DIRECT DESCENDANTS OF JACOB and the TWELVE TRIBES of JACOB/ISRAEL! Regardless of whether they are following Gods law and Judaism. Unless you are a direct descendant of Jacob, you do not, nor will you ever belong to THE HOUSE OF ISRAEL.

    Phil,
thanks so much for this clarification of your ideas. It's very clear and easy to understand.
As you know from our phone discussions, I was in agreement with you, but didn't understand why this was such a major issue for you. This blog explains it well, and I will use this when I encounter believers trapped in the mess of modern theology.
This is a tremendous impetus for me to share the good news with more people,Phil. I'm glad you stuck to your guns and stressed this stuff now! Will

It's all good Will! This is hard material and this forum and medium is a little better than cave wall writing.

It is good to see so many people here who have seen these truths and embraced them to some extent or another. Dispensationalism also correctly answers every claim of every cult.

Every error and heresy we see today so interwoven into all "church teaching" is a culmination of previous errors and heresies, and what we have today is a giant edifice of monumental proportions, all built upon a foundation of sand. The day will come when the Lord will blow the last trump and the Apocalypse will begin, the great unveiling, which is what the word 'apocalypse' means. What we will see at that time is the unveiling of two competing power structures and churches. That of God and that of Satan. These two have fought behind the scenes all through mans history, and finally at the end, we see these two power structures unveiled not only publically but world-wide as well.

But back to the post. It is so important that we rightly divide Gods word, and come to a firm realization of the fact that much of the bible is written to others, and not written directly to us. That doesn't mean we cannot profit from it, rebuke, correction, training in righteousness, yada, yada,..

But only the Apostle Pauls books and words were written directly to the body of Christ (us) and are for us, to us, and all about us. And for many, this is a very hard thing to understand, even though correct. I highly suggest this book to anyone and everyone who wants to understand Gods word and learn how to rightly divide it, as we are commanded.

    Cheers-
    Phil
