"To promote the general welfare"

Posted 21 Oct 2009 at 18:49 PM by trueblue

House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-Md.) said that the individual health insurance mandates included in every health reform bill, which require Americans to have insurance, were “like paying taxes.” He added that Congress has “broad authority” to force Americans to purchase other things as well, so long as it was trying to promote “the general welfare.”

Congressman Dennis Kucinich used this same excuse in a reply to my question to him regarding this.

This reasoning goes against not only the letter of the law, but certainly the spirit of the Constitution and Bill of Rights.

Who are these people to tell me I HAVE to carry a health insurance policy? And further, to put my trust in their corrupt American Medical Association?

I wish someone could explain to me how my not having anything to do with modern medicine affects the general welfare. Will

Megan,it's even more sinister than that. The bottom line of all this is control of the subjects.
virtually ALL the pending and recently passed legislation are all about control. The supposed purposes are simply for mass consumption, the cover story is what appeals to people.
Just like 9/11, the enormous amounts of money made are just fringe benefits, the real purpose is control.
