Professor Wolff received his B.A. from Wadhams Hall Seminary-College, J.D. magna cum laude from Nova Southeastern University School of Law, and LL.M. (in Taxation) from New York University Graduate School of Law. He was in the private practice of tax, corporate and securities law for almost a decade before being appointed Assistant Dean at St. Thomas University School of Law. Professor Wolff now enjoys the rank of Professor of Law and over the past fourteen academic years has specialized in teaching courses in numerous areas of Federal Taxation, Comparative Taxation, Tax Policy, Corporations, and Jurisprudence.

Professor Wolff was elected to public office in 1987 serving as Vice Mayor and Commissioner for the City of Coral Gables. During his elected tenure he served as Chairman of the Municipal Finance and Taxation Committee for the Florida League of Cities, Member of the Finance Administration and Inter-Governmental Affairs Committee of the National League of Cities and on the Board of Directors and as Treasurer of the Dade County League of Cities.

Professor Wolff is admitted to the Florida Bar, Southern District Court of Florida, the Fifth and Eleventh Circuit Courts of Appeals, Supreme Court of Florida, United States Tax Court and Supreme Court of the United States. He is currently Vice Chair of the Board of Trustees of his alma mater, Wadhams Hall Seminary College, Executive Director of the Dade County Educational Facilities Authority and member of the Board of Directors of the Human Rights Institute at St. Thomas University.

Madam / Mr. President,

As we conclude this year the twentieth anniversary of the 1981 “Declaration on the Elimination of all Forms of Intolerance and of Discrimination Based on Religion or Belief”, and approach the international consultative conference on school education in relation to freedom of religion and belief, tolerance and non-discrimination to be held in Madrid November 23rd to 25th, 2001, it is disheartening to observe the increase of religious intolerance in many regions of the World.

Since 1987 special Rapporteurs of the Commission on Human Rights have been examining the problem of religious intolerance. Since 1987 reports have been submitted each year to the Commission and since 1994 to the General Assembly. While some progress has been made the studies and reports reveal a disturbing trend exacerbated by additional factors complicating and compounding the issues and practices of religious intolerance.

The right to freedom of religion is a fundamental human right. It is an inherent right of every human being and is an essential expression of the human spirit, protecting and enhancing the dignity and individuality of each person created in the image of God. Yet as we begin the Third Millennium religious intolerance remains an increasing and pervasive problem with historical roots in social, cultural and religious traditions. Today religious intolerance is co-mingled with new and alarming phenomena.

Extremism in any manifestation is incompatible with the elimination of racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia and related intolerance; particularly when combined with extremist religious and political organizations.[1] History and unfortunately our contemporary world are replete with holocausts and ethnic cleansings that have occurred in the name of religion and perpetrated by extremists utilizing religion as a scapegoat. According to the excellent report submitted by Special Rapporteur Mr. Abdelfattah Amor on Civil And Political Rights, Including Religious Intolerance to the Commission on Human Rights minorities[2] and women are predominantly vulnerable to extremist religious organizations. (E/CN.4/2001/63, Feb. 13, 2001) These extremist organizations utilize a variety of means of intimidation including, aggressive proselytism, harassment, threats, direct or indirect legal restrictions on religion and beliefs, physical violence and murder as has tragically occurred recently in many parts of our world. But extremist organizations do not operate effectively without active or tacit support from local or state governmental authorities.

When both religious intolerance and discrimination against already vulnerable minorities intersect, the offences are not merely cumulative but rather create a new and even more devastating violation of human rights.

Our delegation believes that in order to achieve the elimination of religious intolerance preventative long-range measures must be implemented, in particular through education. The youth of the world must be educated, at the earliest levels, to respect the rich diversity of genuine religious beliefs held by mankind. The beauty of a quilt is comprised of the unique and genuine nature of each thread – an appreciation of the diverse religions of the world enhances the fullness and completes the potentialities of the human being – religious intolerance and discrimination reduce, confine, subjugate and degrade civil society and human dignity.

As recently stated by Wilfred Cardinal Napier of Durban: “We must take upon ourselves the sins of world racism and religious intolerance.”

We call upon all leaders of institutions, governments, religions and civil society to engage in a respectful dialogue with a view towards achieving the goals of this World Conference to end racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia and related intolerance.

We must take positive action to assure that every human being will reach his or her divine destination in dignity, freedom and peace.

Elizabeth II holds a variety of other positions, among them Head of the Commonwealth, Supreme Governor of the Church of England, Duke of Normandy, Lord of Mann, and Paramount Chief of Fiji. Her long reign has seen sweeping changes in her realms and the world at large, perhaps most notably the dissolution of the British Empire (a process that began in the last years of her father's reign) and the consequent evolution of the modern Commonwealth of Nations.

Since 1947, the Queen has been married to Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, born a prince of Greece and Denmark but after naturalisation known as Philip Mountbatten and subsequently created Duke of Edinburgh. To date the couple have four children and eight grandchildren; the eighth (Viscount Severn) was born on 17 December 2007 to Prince Edward and Sophie, Countess of Wessex.[3]

Elizabeth became Queen of the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Pakistan and Ceylon (now Sri Lanka) upon the death of her father, George VI, on 6 February 1952. As other colonies of the British Empire attained independence from the UK during her reign, she acceded to the newly created thrones as Queen of each respective realm so that throughout her 56 years on the throne she has been the sovereign of 32 nations, half of which subsequently became republics. She is currently the only monarch of more than one independent state.

Elizabeth II is currently the second longest reigning monarch of the United Kingdom ranking behind Victoria (who reigned over the UK for 63 years). She is also one of the longest-reigning monarchs of any of its predecessor states, ranking behind George III (who reigned over Great Britain and subsequently the UK for 59) and James VI (who reigned over Scotland for 57). In March 2008 she surpassed Henry III of England.

Following tradition, she is also styled Duke of Lancaster and Duke of Normandy. She is also Commander-in-Chief of the armed forces of many of her realms (and Lord Admiral of the United Kingdom), and is styled Defender of the Faith in various realms for differing reasons.

In September 1998, the 1 st International Forum on Management, Ethics, and Spirituality (IFMES) was held; the 2 nd IFMES took place in 2000 at the HEC-Montréal; and the 3rd IFMES was hosted in May 2003 at St. Thomas University , Minneapolis , Minnesota . These forums were the result of the discovery of the possibility that two ISMA, the economic and the human, can "work hand in hand¨. The activities of the new, non-economic M.T., some of which are found no where else in the world, also contributed to laying the groundwork for the IFMES forums.

At the same era, a new brand is lunched by the Faille brothers. Lucien and Aimé, impressed by the popularity of their mother’s meat pâtés, founded Cordon Bleu Ltée Company. Neighbour of Faille family, J.René shows rapidly is interest. Beginning by being the exclusive distributor for Quebec and Ontario, he got the entire control of the companies in 1946.

In 1952 J.-René had the idea to market a meatball stew just like the one his mother made for the holidays. That year, the renowned Cordon Bleu Meatball Stew came into existence and was destined to become the company’s flagship product.

In 1963, in its thirtieth year of business, les Entreprises J.-René Ouimet ltée merged with Cordon Bleu ltée.

The expansion

M. J.-Rene Ouimet kept the control of his company until 1963. On march 29, he turned over his company’s share to his three children, J.-Robert, Suzanne and Francine. An expansion era is started. In 1964, J.-Robert Ouimet was promoted to executive president. One year later, he became the sole shareholder.

In 1963 and 1964, the Cordon Bleu quality is recognized during the World Quality Competitions held in Paris, Brussels and London. The Cordon Bleu brand won 18 gold medals for exceptional quality of its products. To commemorate this prestigious achievement, the officials of the World Quality Competitions awarded The Cordon Bleu Seal of Quality – a seal that represents Cordon Bleu’s excellence and tradition since 1933.

The year 1979 signalled the beginning of a series of acquisitions, namely the Paris Pâté, Esta, and Clark brands. In 1986, the factory and the administrative offices regrouped in the same location – the move took two years to complete. Moreover, many private label brand are also produced in Anjou factory for the biggest Canadian food banner. Also, with the HACCP certification, the company is exporting products in USA and Australia. Within the knowledge acquired in this great history, Ouimet-Cordon Bleu Foods Inc. will continue to accomplish its mission: producing and marketing highly differentiated and value-added food products.

Lawrence Mario Giannini, son of founder Amadeo Peter Giannini, was elected president of Bank of America in 1936. In 1945, Bank of America became America's largest bank, with assets of $5 billion. A.P. Giannini died in 1947. In 1953, regulators succeeded in forcing the separation of Transamerica and Bank of America.

When Peter Amadeo Giannini, the son of Italian immigrants, began dreaming of his career in turn-of-the-century San Francisco, he had not set his heart on building a banking empire. Instead, at the age of 12 he was sneaking out of his home at night to work in his stepfather's produce business and, by the age of 19, was a full partner. His early success at this business allowed him to retire at the age of 31 with a modest, but comfortable, fortune. His foray into the banking world did not begin until several years later when he received a legacy from his father-in-law, Joseph Cuneo, who had made Giannini a director of his Columbus Savings and Loan Society, a building and loan association in San Francisco. Giannini's career in banking lasted for over forty years, and during this time he established the Transamerica Corporation.

After Giannini was appointed a director of Columbus Savings and Loan he became immersed in a number of disagreements with other directors of the bank over policy issues. He consequently left the Savings and Loan Society and established his own banking business which was located directly across the street from Columbus Savings and Loan. Giannini organized the Bank of Italy with $150,000 in capital contributed by his stepfather and ten friends. He envisioned the bank as an institution for the "little fellow," and the bank subsequently made loans to merchants, farmers, and laborers who were mostly of Italian descent.

Ironically, the San Francisco fire and earthquake of 1906 established Giannini's reputation in the banking world. As he stood amid the rubble of his bank on the morning of the earthquake, he was able to salvage over $2 million in gold and securities. In order to avoid the looters who were running through the city, he hid his bank's resources under piles of vegetables in a horse-drawn cart borrowed from his former produce business. Giannini immediately alerted his depositors that their savings were safe and began making loans to businessmen who had lost their savings and their companies.

Giannini's success as a banker is also clearly evidenced by his anticipation of the 1907 stock market crash, and his accumulation of gold before the crash. When the crash came Giannini was able to pay his depositors in cash while other banks were using certificates for cash. From this experience, Giannini realized that only larger banks would ensure security, and therefore he began purchasing small banks and converting them into branches of the Bank of Italy. With these acquisitions Giannini established the first branch banking policy in California.

The Bank of Italy grew so rapidly that by 1919 Giannini was able to form Bancitaly Corporation to organize the expansion. In 1928 Bancitaly Corporation was followed by Transamerica Corporation, which was formed as a holding company for all Giannini's banking, insurance, and industrial concerns.

Giannini's expansion into other areas of the financial services had established him as a leader in the financial services field. By 1929 he had moved into the New York banking scene and purchased the solidly established Bank of America. The following year after this important acquisition, all of Giannini's banks were consolidated into Bank of America National Trust and Savings Association. Transamerica played the role of parent company throughout this period.

In 1931, just a year after the consolidation of his banks under Bank America, Giannini retired and left the top post to Elisha Walker, a Wall Street investment banker. Walker did his best to break up this "empire" created by Giannini. Not surprisingly, Giannini forced Walker out in what was called a "furious proxy battle" at the 1932 annual meeting.

During the previous few decades Giannini's operations had been closely observed by both Wall Street and regulatory branches of the U.S. government; Giannini's success had found critics within both these institutions. Throughout the 1930s Transamerica experienced problems with regulatory procedures and changes enacted by the government. In 1937 Transamerica sold 58 percent of its stock in Bank America, although it still controlled the board of directors. At the time of his death in 1949, Giannini was embroiled in a fight with the Federal Reserve Board as to whether or not Transamerica had violated the Clayton Anti-Trust Act in creating a "credit monopoly" by placing directors on the boards of banks in the huge chain owned by Bank of America. It was the Reserve Board's belief that Transamerica still controlled the bank even after the 1937 split.

Although he could not give any, he did submit evidence regarding the remarkable affinity the Jesuit Order has with the Bank of America, which they funded right from its very inception. Here's what Phelps wrote:

The Jesuit rule of the Bank of America is undeniable. The Bank is a member of Cardinal Egan's CFR in New York. Thus, even though you have only one reference to the fact that the Order's front man in the founding of the Bank of America, Italian Roman Catholic Amadeo Peter Giannini, was a Knight of Malta, that will be sufficient.

chapel at the Jesuit Novitiate at Wernersville, PA. His Eminence Patrick Cardinal Hayes issued a
statement in the public press which reflects his personal attachment and keen sense of loss: “Church,
country, and city may well lament the passing of Nicholas Frederic Brady, a lovable personality whose
sublime Christian faith, unbounded charity, inspiring family life, notable citizenship, and sensitive fidelity to high ideals in business relations leave an impress long to be remembered and cherished by a host of friends who deeply mourn their personal loss.” Genevieve Garvan Brady died in 1938 and is buried in a
vault next to her beloved - Nicholas.

While working in baseball's legal affairs, Kuhn served as a counselor for the NL in a lawsuit brought against it by the City of Milwaukee when the Milwaukee Braves moved to Atlanta following the 1965 season.

After the owners forced out William Eckert in 1968, Kuhn seemed like a logical replacement for the job of commissioner. He, unlike Eckert, was very aware of the inner workings of Major League Baseball before taking office. Kuhn's closest challengers to the commissionership were Mike Burke, president of the New York Yankees; and San Francisco Giants head of baseball operations Chub Feeney, who instead became president of the National League.[1] Kuhn was the youngest (42), tallest (6-foot-5), and heaviest (240 pounds, 109 kg) commissioner in history.

Actions as commissioner

His tenure was marked by labor strikes (most notably in 1981), owner disenchantment, and the end of baseball's reserve clause, yet baseball enjoyed unprecedented attendance gains (from 23 million in 1968 to 45.5 million in 1983) and television contracts during the same time frame.

Kuhn suspended numerous players for involvement with drugs and gambling, and took a strong stance against any activity that he perceived to be "not in the best interests of baseball."

In 1970, he suspended star Detroit Tigers pitcher Denny McLain indefinitely (the suspension was later set at 3 months) due to McLain's involvement in a bookmaking operation, and later suspended McLain for the rest of the season for carrying a gun. He barred both Willie Mays (in 1979) and Mickey Mantle (in 1983) from the sport due to their involvement in casino promotion; neither was directly involved in gambling, and both were reinstated by Kuhn's successor Peter Ueberroth in 1985.

Also in 1970, Kuhn described Jim Bouton's Ball Four as "detrimental to baseball" and demanded that Bouton retract it. The book has been republished several times and is now considered a classic.

On October 13, 1971, the World Series held a night game for the first time. Kuhn, who thought that baseball could attract a larger audience by featuring a prime time telecast (as opposed to a mid-afternoon broadcast, when most fans either worked or attended school), pitched the idea to NBC. An estimated 61 million people watched Game 4 on NBC; TV ratings for a World Series game during the daytime hours would not have approached such a record number. Kuhn's vision in this instance has been fulfilled, as all the World Series games are now shown in prime time.

Kuhn's war on drugs

After being in office for over ten years, Kuhn had grown a strong reputation for being hard on players who abused drugs. Kuhn was quick to punish players who used drugs with heavy fines and suspensions. Kansas City Royals catcher Darrell Porter told the Associated Press that during the winter of 1979-1980 he became paranoid, convinced that Kuhn knew about his drug abuse, was trying to sneak into his house, and planned to ban him from baseball for life. Porter found himself sitting up at night in the dark watching out the front window, waiting for Kuhn to approach, clutching billiard balls and a shotgun. Ironically, when Porter was named the most valuable player of the 1982 World Series while playing for the Cardinals, Kuhn was on hand to congratulate him.

In 1980, during the Iranian hostage crisis, Kuhn sat at a baseball game with Jeremiah Denton, a Navy admiral and former POW in Vietnam who would be elected U.S. Senator later that year from the state of Alabama. Recalling the event to The Washington Post, Kuhn believed that "that afternoon...the idea of a lifetime baseball pass was discussed," and upon their return from Iran, each of the 52 hostages was given one of these unique passes.[2]

In 1983, four players from the Kansas City Royals - Willie Wilson, Jerry Martin, Willie Mays Aikens, and Vida Blue - were found guilty of cocaine use. In addition, such established stars as Ferguson Jenkins, Keith Hernandez, Dave Parker, and Dale Berra admitted to having problems with drugs.

Leaving office

Kuhn was both praised and attacked for the firm stand that he levied against offenders. In 1982, some of the owners organized a move to push him out of office. In 1983, Kuhn and his supporters made a last-ditch effort to renew his contract but ultimately failed. Kuhn, though, was allowed to stay for the 1984 regular season before being replaced by Peter Ueberroth.

Life after baseball

Following baseball, Kuhn returned to the law firm of Willkie, Farr & Gallagher and assumed presidency of the Kent Group, a business, sports and financial consulting firm. Mr. Kuhn left Willkie, Farr & Gallagher to join with Harvey D. Myerson, a former senior partner in the firm of Finley, Kumble, Wagner, Underberg, Manley, Myerson & Casey, to form the firm of Myerson & Kuhn.[3] He also became an adviser and board member for Domino's Pizza and the Ave Maria Foundation.

Kuhn had been a longtime resident of Ridgewood, New Jersey.[4] According to an AP wire story,[5] he partnered in a law firm with Harvey Myerson which subsequently went bankrupt and then sold his New Jersey home and moved to Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida, because his home and other assets were shielded from the bankruptcy.

Kuhn became the Chairman of the Catholic Advisory Board of the Ave Maria Mutual Funds upon the inception of their first mutual fund, Ave Maria Catholic Values Fund, in May 2001.

During a telecast of the 2004 World Series, broadcaster Joe Buck announced that just prior to his 78th birthday, Kuhn was scheduled to undergo open-heart surgery.[6]

Kuhn died in 2007, and was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame later the same year.

Racial insensitivity and other criticisms

A number of observers complained about Kuhn's apparent insensitivity (or at least poor public relations) on race-related matters:

* When the decision was made to induct Negro League players into the Baseball Hall of Fame starting in 1971, Kuhn announced that their plaques would be in a separate wing of the Hall, presumably based on the argument that the Negro Leagues were not true "Major League Baseball" leagues, ignoring the historical fact that Major League Baseball's exclusionary policies had compelled the creation of the Negro Leagues in the first place. (He also ignored the fact that the Hall of Fame is a separate entity from Major League Baseball; it is under no obligation to induct and chronicle only Major League Baseball players and events, as inductees have included figures from the era before the first professional leagues were established. In spite of this, both sides cooperate as it is in their mutual interests.) Whatever the motivation for this idea might have been, the resulting public outcry resulted in the inclusion of Negro Leaguers' plaques with the others.

* Although Kuhn was personally in attendance in Cincinnati when Atlanta Braves slugger Hank Aaron hit his 714th home run to tie Babe Ruth for the all-time record, the commissioner made himself a target for criticism when he was absent on the historic night that Aaron hit his 715th home run in Atlanta. NBC-TV announcer Tony Kubek specifically commented on that point, on the air. Kuhn argued that he had a prior engagement that he could not break.

* He was said to have personally added the name of Carl Yastrzemski to the All-Star roster in Yaz's last season, but had failed to make the same gesture for Willie Stargell in 1982.

* According to George Steinbrenner, during the YES Network's broadcast of the Thurman Munson episode of Yankeeography, Kuhn was opposed to the Yankees team chartering a plane to Ohio to attend Munson's funeral. Kuhn cited the possibility of not returning in time for their next scheduled game and therefore having to forfeit.

* When the major leagues went on strike in 1981, Kuhn made no effort to order the striking players back, and allowed a two-tiered playoff series to be played after the regular season. The St. Louis Cardinals and the Cincinnati Reds, who had the best won-lost records in the National League, were left out altogether.[7]

* According to an article in Sports illustrated, while Kuhn enforced gambling rules against Willie Mays and Mickey Mantle, he took no action against Yankee owner George Steinbrenner, who owned a racetrack. (The first commissioner, Kenesaw Mountain Landis, had ordered owners and managers to sell out any interest they owned in racetracks.)
