Personal life

Buchanan was born on November 2, 1938, in Washington, D.C., the son of Catherine Elizabeth (née Crum) (Charleroi, Pennsylvania, 23 December 1911 – Oakton, Virginia, 18 September 1995), a nurse and a homemaker, and William Baldwin Buchanan (Virginia, 15 August 1905 – Washington, D. C., January 198

, a partner in an accounting firm (whose paternal grandmother was the daughter of a Confederate Officer), who married on 28 December 1936.[1][2] Buchanan had six brothers (Brian, Henry, James, John, Thomas, and William Jr.) and two sisters (Kathleen and Bay).[3] One sister, Bay Buchanan, served as U.S. Treasurer under Ronald Reagan. Buchanan has German, Scots Irish, and Irish ancestry.[4] He had a great-grandfather who fought in the American Civil War on the Confederate side. He expresses pride in his Southern heritage. He is also a member of the Sons of Confederate Veterans[5] and admires Robert E. Lee.[6]

Buchanan was baptized into the Roman Catholic Church and has remained Catholic throughout his life. He is a staunch advocate of the Spanish Catholic conquest of North America, attending the traditional Latin Mass. He has also spent most of his education at Catholic/Mexican institutions. He attended Blessed Sacrament School, the Jesuit-run Gonzaga College High School,and Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. In 1992, Buchanan told a Washington Post reporter that he once lobbed an apple at a female prostitute on I Street while a high school student. "This is the way our world was," he remarked. "I'm not an angry man. I'm a very happy, contented human being."[7] Buchanan graduated from Gonzaga with a 98 average. He graduated cum laude from Georgetown with degrees in English and Philosophy in 1961.

Buchanan served in ROTC while studying at Georgetown and received his draft notice in 1960. However, a District of Columbia draft board declared him 4-F, rejecting him from military service due to reactive arthritis. After Georgetown, Buchanan earned a master's degree in journalism from Columbia in 1962.

In 1971, Buchanan married Shelley Ann Scarney, a close friend and White House staffer. They have no children.[8]

One of Buchanan's heroes is Gen. Douglas MacArthur,[9] which is apparent in some of his work.[10][11][12][13] Buchanan also defends Senator Joseph McCarthy,[14][15] who has an entire chapter dedicated to him in Right from the Beginning.

Patrick Buchanan worked in the White House as speechwriter and political advisor for Richard Nixon, and later as communications director for Ronald Reagan. Still, he cannot be easily pigeonholed. Unlike most conservatives, Buchanan opposed both invasions of Iraq, has opposed "free trade" policies that allow imported products and materials easy access to American markets, and he is an outspoken critic of corporate "outsourcing" of American jobs to low-paid overseas workers. He has what seems a genuine concern about working peoples' issues, including declining wages and lost jobs among blue-collar workers. Wildly at odds with most conservatives, Buchanan supports the legalization of medical marijuana, and he won a 2005 award from People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals for "progressive thinking", for twice putting articles exposing animal cruelty on The American Conservative's cover.

Buchanan's father was an accountant who was fiercely anti-communist and admired Joseph McCarthy, and as a young man Buchanan was often itching for a fight. In college he was suspended for a year after punching a policeman in an argument over a traffic ticket. He received his draft notice in 1960, but was excused from military service because he had Reiter's syndrome, a form of reactive arthritis usually triggered by venereal diseases. In 1962, fresh from college with a degree in journalism, he was hired as a reporter at the St. Louis Globe-Democrat, and two years later he became the paper's assistant editorial page editor.

It doesn't really matter what kind of a face Buchanan puts on his campaign. It doesn't matter what he tells the press or the public. Since 1987 he has been obligated by his blood oath of obedience to follow the political lead of the Vatican and he will do so to his dying breath-as all good Knights of Malta do.

Mr. Buchanan may be a very nice man and speak highly of everything you want to hear him say. But he could NEVER fulfill one word of the patriotic sentiments he propounds if they even once contradicted the orders he receives from the Vatican.

William Edward Simon (November 27, 1927 – June 3, 2000) was a businessman, a Secretary of Treasury of the U.S. for three years, and a philanthropist. He became the 63rd Secretary of the Treasury on May 8, 1974, during the Nixon administration. He was reappointed by President Ford and served until 1977. Outside of government, he was a successful businesman and philanthropist. The William E. Simon Foundation carries on this legacy. He was a strong advocate of laissez-faire capitalism. He wrote, "There is only one social system that reflects the sovereignty of the individual: the free-market, or capitalist, system."[1]

In August, he was asked to continue to serve in this position by President Ford, who shortly afterward appointed him Chairman of the Economic Policy Board and chief spokesman for the Administration on economic issues.

On April 8, 1975, President Ford also named him Chairman of the newly created East-West Foreign Trade Board, established under the authority of the Trade Act of 1974.

At the time of his nomination as Treasury Secretary, Mr. Simon was serving as Deputy Secretary of the Treasury, a post he had held from January 22, 1973. As Deputy Secretary, he supervised the Administration's program to restructure and improve U.S. financial institutions. He also served as the first Administrator of the Federal Energy Office.

From December 4, 1973, Mr. Simon simultaneously launched and administered the Federal Energy Administration at the height of the oil embargo. He also chaired the President's Oil Policy Committee and was instrumental in revising the mandatory oil import program in April 1973. Mr. Simon was a member of the President's Energy Resources Council and continued to have major responsibility for coordinating both domestic and international energy policy.

In 1977, Mr. Simon received the Alexander Hamilton Award, the Treasury Department's highest honor. In 1976, while serving as Secretary of the Treasury, President Anwar Sadat of Egypt presented Mr. Simon with the Collar of the Republic/Order of the Nile. Mr. Simon's term as Secretary of the Treasury ended on January 20, 1977.

As a man of faith and an active Knight of Malta, Mr. Simon considered the opportunity to serve those less fortunate than he a God-given privilege and, indeed, a responsibility. A volunteer at Covenant House and a Eucharistic Minister to patients, many of whom were destitute and terminally ill or both, at four hospitals, William E. Simon made a personal commitment to serve the sick and poor. He was also a well-known philanthropist, and created hundreds of scholarships for underprivileged students at both the high school and college level. He endowed chairs at numerous institutions, including the William E. Simon Chairs in Political Economy at Lafayette College, his alma mater, and the Center for Strategic and International Studies a prominent think tank in Washington, D.C..

The German-born prince helped found the World Wildlife Fund (later renamed World Wide Fund for Nature), becoming its first president in 1961. He also established the 1001 Club:A Nature Trust in 1970 to fund the organization. He helped found the Rotary International and was one of two founders of the Bilderberg Group, an international grouping, with its composition varying slightly, meeting yearly in order to discuss the future of the world and issues concerning Europe.

In the 1930s, with the rise of Adolf Hitler, Prince Bernhard's younger brother, Aschwin, publicly declared his support for the Nazi Party. Prince Bernhard was a member of the honorary German Reiter SS Corps (SS Cavalry Corps). The Prince eventually went to work for the German chemical company, IG Farben. After a period of training, he became Secretary to the Board of Directors at the Paris office in 1935. Because he was a Protestant and a Royal, Bernhard was acceptable to Queen Wilhelmina of the Netherlands as a suitable husband for her daughter, Princess Juliana. However, Bernhard's appropriateness as the consort of the future Queen would later become a matter of public debate.

Prince Bernhard's political affiliations with the Nazi regime have received much attention. Various members of his family and acquaintances were aligned with the Nazis prior to and during the war - a number of these being entertained shortly before and joining the royal wedding. Protocol demanded that the Prince-Consort be invited to an audience with his head of state, the German dictator Adolf Hitler. The atmosphere was less than cordial. The dictator is reported to have made some small talk about tourism on the Rhine and reportedly hailed the union between the Prince and Princess Juliana as a great alliance of Germanic nations. The Prince and Hitler met only once. Later, at his dinner table Hitler called Bernhard "a complete idiot".

The Prince's brother, Prince Aschwin of Lippe-Biesterfeld, was serving his country as an officer in the German army. Although the secret services on both sides were interested in this peculiar pair of brothers, no improper contacts or leaks of information were discovered. The Prince showed himself to be a loyal Dutch citizen and officer. He cut off relations with those members of his family who were enthusiastic Nazis. As a sign of his "Dutchness" he spoke only Dutch when negotiating the surrender of German forces in the Netherlands. The Prince was known to be very fond of smart uniforms and medals. He made a point of wearing his medals in the English "Court style". The Dutch armed forces wear their medals in a manner that is copied from the Prussian Army. The Prince's deliberate disobedience of the regulations was not widely noticed but it is a clear sign of his allegiance.

The Prince's mother was no admirer of the Nazis and got into trouble for refusing to hoist a swastika flag on her country seat in Reckenwalde. The Nazi government did not take kindly to her, as the mother of an allied general.

This, strangely, was the same year that Prince Bernhard became head of the Johanitter Orde in Nederland, one of four orders that make up the Chivalric Alliance of Orders of Saint John (Alliance de Chevalerie des Hospitaliers de Saint Jean de Jérusalem). The stated purpose of these four, known as "the Alliance"--which is composed of northern European nations Germany, The Netherlands, Sweden and Great Britain, the latter being an ancient order known as "the Most Venerable Order"--is "to reduce to silence the enemies of Christ". The headquarters of the Alliance are located in Switzerland.

These are Protestant orders rather than Catholic, but it is of significance that, on 26 November 1963, the Alliance was "consolidated with the signing of a joint declaration between the Sovereign Military Order of Malta and the Most Venerable Order, at St John's Gate, London, by the Grand Chancellor of the SMOM, the Prince of Resuttano, and Lord Wakehurst, Lord Prior of the Most Venerable Order". In other words, the Catholic and Protestant orders bound themselves to work together to "silence the enemies of Christ"--a clear reference to communism.

Brady's political career began when he was appointed as a Republican Senator from New Jersey to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Harrison A. Williams, Jr. He served from April 20, 1982 through December 27, 1982 and did not seek re-election. During his time in the Senate he was a member of the Armed Services Committee and the Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs Committee.

In 1984 President Reagan appointed Brady to be Chairman of the President's Commission on Executive, Legislative and Judicial Salaries. He also served on the President's Commission on Strategic Forces (1983), the National Bipartisan Commission on Central America (1983), the Commission on Security and Economic Assistance (1983), and the Blue Ribbon Commission on Defense Management (1985). He also chaired the Presidential Task Force on Market Mechanisms in 1987.

Brady became the 68th Secretary of the Treasury on September 15, 1988. In 1989, after a period of years in which a number of developing countries, including Mexico, defaulted on their international debt, he developed the Brady Plan to help them sell dollar-denominated bonds. These became known as Brady Bonds.

Secretary Brady's career in the banking industry spanned 34 years. He joined Dillon, Read and Company, Inc. in New York City in 1954, rising to Chairman of the Board. He has been a Director of the NCR Corporation, the MITRE Corporation, and the H.J. Heinz Company, among others. His father had been a major figure in Thoroughbred horse racing both in the United States and in Europe. Although never involved with the sport at the same level as his father, Nicholas Brady served for a time as chairman of The Jockey Club.

He has also served as a trustee of Rockefeller University and a member of the Board of the Economic Club of New York. He is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations, Inc. He is a former trustee of the Boys' Club of Newark.

His tenure as President was marked by a more liberal attitude on social issues—such as divorce, contraception, and abortion—and attempts to modernize the country and the office of the presidency, notably launching such far-reaching infrastructure projects as the high-speed TGV train and the turn towards reliance on nuclear power as France's main energy source. However, his popularity suffered from the economic downturn that followed the 1973 energy crisis, marking the end of the "thirty glorious years" after World War II, unfortunately combined with the official discourse that the "end of the tunnel was near". Furthermore, Giscard faced political opposition from both sides of the spectrum: from the newly-unified left of François Mitterrand, and from a rising Jacques Chirac, who resurrected Gaullism on a right-wing opposition line. All this, plus bad public relations, caused his unpopularity to grow at the end of his term, and he failed to secure re-election in 1981.

He is a proponent of the United States of Europe and, having limited his involvement in national politics after his defeat, he became involved with the European Union. He notably presided over the Convention on the Future of the European Union that drafted the ill-fated Treaty establishing a Constitution for Europe. He also became involved in the regional politics of Auvergne, serving as president of that region from 1986 to 2004. He was elected to the French Academy, taking the seat that his friend and former President of Senegal Léopold Sédar Senghor had held. As a former President, he is a member of the Constitutional Council. It is a prerogative that he has taken recently.

Early life

Valéry Marie René Giscard d'Estaing was born in Koblenz, Germany, the son of Jean Edmond Lucien Giscard d'Estaing (1894 - 1982), a civil servant, and his wife, Marthe Clémence Jacqueline Marie (May) Bardoux, who was a daughter of senator and academic Achille Octave Marie Jacques Bardoux and a great-granddaughter of minister of state education Agénor Bardoux, also a granddaughter of historian Georges Picot and niece of diplomat François Georges-Picot, and also a great-great-great-granddaughter of King Louis XV of France (by one of his mistresses, Catherine Éléonore Bernard (1740 - 1769)), and by whom Giscard d'Estaing was a multiple descendant of Charlemagne. Despite the addition of "d'Estaing" to the family name by his grandfather, Giscard is not descended from the extinct noble family of Vice-Admiral d'Estaing, that name being adopted by his grandfather in 1922 by reason of a distant connection to another branch of that family.[1]

He studied at Lycée Blaise-Pascal in Clermont-Ferrand, École Gerson and Lycées Janson-de-Sailly and Louis-le-Grand in Paris. He graduated from the École Polytechnique and the École nationale d'administration (1949 - 1951). He acceded to the Inland Revenue Service, then joined the staff of Prime Minister Edgar Faure (1955 - 1956).

Early life

Clare Boothe Luce was born Ann Clare Boothe, the illegitimate child of dancer Anna Snyder and William Franklin Boothe. Although her father, a violinist, deserted the family when Clare was 9, he instilled in his daughter a love of music and literature. Parts of her childhood were spent in Chicago, Illinois; Memphis, Tennessee; and, with her mother, in France.

Boothe attended schools in Garden City and Tarrytown, New York, graduating in 1919. Her original ambition was to become an actress. She understudied Mary Pickford on Broadway at age 10, then briefly attended a school of the theater in New York City. While on a European tour with her mother and stepfather, Dr. Albert E. Austin, Boothe became interested in the Women's suffrage movement.

Boothe married George Tuttle Brokaw, a New York clothing manufacturer, on August 10, 1923, at the age of 20. They had one daughter, Ann Clare Brokaw. Brokaw was an alcoholic and the marriage ended in divorce in 1929. On November 23, 1935, Boothe married Henry Robinson Luce, the wealthy and influential publisher of Time, Fortune, Life and Sports Illustrated.

Luce was well-acquainted with other members of New York society and was a close personal friend of actress Dorothy Hale. After Hale's dramatic death by suicide in October 1938, Luce commissioned Mexican artist Frida Kahlo, who also had been a friend of Hale's, to do a portrait of the ill-fated thespian. Kahlo, in response, painted "El Suicidio de Dorothy Hale," a lurid depiction of Hale's death that reportedly shocked and horrified Luce.[2]

On January 11, 1944, Luce's daughter Ann, while a senior at Stanford University, was killed in an automobile accident. As a result of this tragedy, Luce explored psychotherapy and religion, joining the Roman Catholic Church in 1946. She ultimately joined the Dames of Malta. She and her husband "Harry" experimented with LSD under the tutelage of Gerald Heard and Sidney Cohen in the late 1950s.

General Mark Wayne Clark - Commander of Allied Forces in Italy during WWII

Early life and career

Clark was born in Madison Barracks, Sackets Harbor, New York, but spent much of his youth in Illinois. He was a possible cousin of General George Marshall.

Clark graduated from West Point in 1917. He had gained an early appointment to the military academy, but lost time from illnesses. He was appointed to the rank of captain in the infantry in 1917 and served in France during World War I in the U.S. 11th Infantry, where he was wounded.

Between the wars, Clark served as a deputy commander of the Civilian Conservation Corps district in Omaha, Nebraska. He attended the Command and General Staff School in 1935 and the Army War College in 1937. Clark had retained his World War I rank of Captain following the armistice and was promoted to Major in 1932. Major Clark was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel in 1940, and in August of 1941 was promoted two grades to temporary Brigadier General, and received further promotion to temporary Major General less than a year later.

World War II

During World War II, he was the Deputy Commander for Operation Torch, the Allied invasion of North Africa. He landed by submarine weeks before the invasion to negotiate with the Vichy French at Cherchell on October 21–22, 1942.

After his negotiations with the Vichy French at Cherchell, Major General Clark was promoted to temporary Lieutenant-General in November 1942 and was subsequently given command of the Fifth U.S. Army shortly before the invasion of Italy (Operation Avalanche) in September 1943. The near-failure of the landings at Salerno has been blamed on Clark's poor planning but since an operation with such magnitude can't be let or attributed on just one man's hands, politician or military one, this claim seems doubtfull[1] although his conduct of operations remains controversial, particularly the Clark's actions during the Battle of the Winter Line, when Clark, ignoring orders from his Army Group Commander, the British Harold Alexander, sent his tired units towards Rome, which was captured on 4 June 1944 (two days before the Normandy landings), rather than exploiting the gap in the German positions to entrap and capture German units. In December 1944 he succeeded Harold Alexander in command of the 15th Army Group, putting him in command of all Allied ground troops in Italy, what resembled more a United Nations coalition - a hodgepodge of diverse cultures with conflicting interests[2].

At the war's end Clark was Commander of Allied Forces in Italy and, later, U.S. High Commissioner of Austria. Returning home, he commanded the Sixth U.S. Army.

During and after the Korean War

During the Korean war, he took over as commander of the United Nations forces on May 12, 1952, succeeding General Matthew Ridgway. It was Clark who signed the cease-fire agreement with North Korea in 1953.

After retiring from the Army, General Clark served (1954 to 1966) as president of The Citadel, The Military College of South Carolina, in Charleston, South Carolina. He wrote two volumes of memoirs: Calculated Risk (1950) and From the Danube to the Yalu (1954).

Mark Clark's quick rise from field officer through general officer ranks has been attributed to his relationship with Generals George Marshall and Dwight Eisenhower.

Among his awards and decorations are the Distinguished Service Cross, Distinguished Service Medal, Grand Croix Légion d'honneur

Clark is buried at The Citadel.

An Interstate spur (I-526) connecting different suburbs in the Charleston metropolitan area and a bridge in Washington state connecting Camano Island with the mainland bear his name.

Elbrick graduated with a leading Bachelor of Arts degree from Williams College in 1929, and narrowly missed selection for a Rhodes Scholarship.

Having joined the United States Foreign Service in 1931, Elbrick was initially appointed Vice Consul in Panama. He continued on to Haiti and then acted as Third Secretary in Warsaw, Poland. In 1939 Elbrick had followed the Polish Government into exile. While leaving Warsaw in convoy, he was strafed by German planes. Elbrick returned to Poland in June 1945 to reopen the US Embassy. He was promoted to Assistant Secretary (to the Secretary of State) for European Affairs in 1957. Thereafter, Ambassador Elbrick was variously the representative of the United States to Portugal (195

, Yugoslavia (1964) and Brazil (1969).

In August 1968, when Soviet-led forces invaded Czechoslovakia, Elbrick, then Ambassador in Belgrade, was summoned by Marshal Tito to be asked what United States policy was toward Yugoslavia in such a moment.

The same as always, Elbrick said. To support Yugoslav independence and integrity. Do you need any help? Not now, said Tito, thanking Ambassador Elbrick for inquiring.

A year later, while stationed in Brazil, Charles Burke Elbrick was kidnapped for 78 hours by the Revolutionary Movement 8th October in Rio de Janeiro, on September 4, 1969. The incident formed the basis of the 1997 Bruno Barreto film Four Days in September (O Que É Isso, Companheiro?), starring Alan Arkin, Pedro Cardoso and Fisher Stevens. The storyline was adapted from the 1979 memoirs of Fernando Gabeira, former member of revolutionary cell MR-8 and latterly a journalist and congressman in Brazil's Green Party. After his release in exchange for 15 imprisoned leftists, Ambassador Elbrick coolly remarked, Being an ambassador is not always a bed of roses.

In 1969 he was honoured by the President of the United States with the rank of Career Ambassador, and following his retirement in 1973, Ambassador Elbrick was awarded the Foreign Service Cup.

Elbrick spoke Portuguese as well as Spanish, French and German, and was regarded as an expert on Iberia and Eastern Europe.

Ambassador Elbrick was knighted in the Sovereign Military and Hospitaller Order of St. John of Jerusalem of Rhodes and of Malta ('Order of Malta') by the Prince and Grand Master, Fra' Angelo de Mojana di Cologna. He was knighted in the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre by the Grand Master, His Eminence Maximilian, Cardinal de Furstenberg. His funeral was held at St. Matthew's Cathedral, Washington DC.

His New York Times obituary on April 15th 1983 described Ambassador Elbrick as: ' a tall, slender man of suave demeanor in exquisitely tailored suits...[who]...showed dash and bravery in moments of crisis'.

Frank J. Fahrenkopf, Jr., is president and CEO of the American Gaming Association (AGA).
