Movie Sets and Controlled Demolitions--- CDI and Lethal Weapon 3

In 1991, CDI was hired to bring down the old Orlando City Hall in Orlando, Florida. The new City Hall was complete, and was very close behind the old building, making wrecking ball applications unusable.

After Chapman and Son finished gutting the building, CDI was brought in to drop the rest.

Warner Brothers contacted the City about using the event in the movie Lethal Weapon 3.

The result was a carefully timed combination of pyrotechnic special effects, in combination with the building implosion.

The idea that Hollywood/TV special effects would be combined with a building demolition had many possible dress rehearsals before 911.

At 1:24 am, October 25, 1991, Controlled Demolition Incorporated of Phoenix, Maryland, felled the 108,000 square foot, Old Orlando City Hall in Orlando, Florida.

CDI was contracted by Chapman & Son Inc. of Orlando, Florida, the Prime Demolition Contractor, and the City of Orlando to perform the explosives phase of the project. CDI furnished $20 million insurance to guarantee the safety of the new City Hall, just 4 feet away.

Warner Bros. Inc., currently filming the movie "Lethal Weapon 3", contacted the City of Orlando to see if the City Hall implosion could be utilized as the opening "special effects sequence" for the new film.

CDI worked directly with special effects crews in carefully designing an intricate delay sequence, which allowed both CDI's explosives and Warner Bros. pyrotechnics to be initiated simultaneously. Through the use of 180 pounds of explosives in concert with 400 special effects charges, the 33 year old building collapsed in less than six seconds.

The end result was not only a superb implosion, but a spectacular visual effect for the upcoming film.

Lethal Weapon 3 was released in May of 1992.

They have done shows in Las Vegas also. As you can see in the YouTube video, the intricate timing was no problem, as intricate timing IS what they do!

The CDI website proudly shows off all of their show business applications.

I also don't mind mentioning their involvement with the removal of the Murrah Building in Oklahoma City, again, in the context that the "truck bomb" was more pyrotechnic effect than explosive.

There is a long marriage between these two, as it is a perfectly natural, symbiotic relationship. If you are going to artfully blow something up, you want someone to film it (and pay you). If you make movies, it's really cool to have things blown up on film (and it pays). Like Peanut Butter and Chocolate.

We have seen stage props at the WTC. We have seen Actors at the WTC. There were fake "documentary" makers at the WTC. We have seen evidence of video fakery at the WTC. The Towers were indeed Hollow, just like an Old West Mainstreet movie set. It was a Television Extravaganza. A commercial designed to run FOREVER to sell EVERYTHING.

There are a few (not many) other people in the world with enough expertise in explosives and demolition to have pulled it off, but none with the same experience in the entertainment field. The field was small to begin with, but CDI stands proudly alone when it comes to accomodating and coordinating with "special events" like movies.
